Article No. 0164 Are You A Friend of God?“Abraham believed God,and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.”
If you don’t believe in God, it shouldn’t matter because you can’t be friends with someone that you don’t even think exists! But many people – maybe even you – do believe God exists and that’s as far as it goes. So given that, are you his “Friend” and is he your Friend? Today’s verse tells us the answer. Abraham was a man living in the very ancient land of Ur (modern day southern Iraq near the Euphrates river) who was called by God out of his worship of idols and became the father of the Jews. After hearing God’s voice he obediently followed his instruction to go to what today is known as the Holy Land where his decedents would become as “numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore.” (Genesis 22:17) It was because of his faith and obedience that Abraham was blessed and was great, and became a “Friend of God.” Becoming a friend of God does not require great acts of sacrifice, service, self-denial or servitude. It is not obtained by legalistically following a set of rules, laws or standards, by being religious or pious or making an outward show of your “religion” by wearing a cross, a veil, dressing a certain way or wearing various headpieces. Being a Friend of God is solely based on believing that “God is upon all them for good that seek him.” (Ezra 8:22). The Apostle Paul also put it this way:
for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Hebrews 11:6 It is easy to become God’s Friend! Simply believe that HE IS, be obedient to him, conscientiously seek him out and his will for your life. Nothing could be greater than having God as YOUR Friend. Are you HIS FRIEND today?
