The Beatitudes:
Understanding The
Sermon On The Mount

Matthew 5:3-12

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
(The Holy Spirit will comfort us during remorse or grief.)

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
(Meekness is having a humble, gentle spirit that is obedient to God.)

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
(Those dissatisfied with their present spiritual growth who seek the deeper things of God). They long for more and more of the knowledge of the Lord, and are thirsty and hungry for the Lord and His word.)

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
(Having mercy is showing compassion putting ones self in the other person’s place.)

Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.
(Those whose moral being is free from contamination of sin. One who possses Gods nature with unclouded vision.)

Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.
(One who is at peace with God, himself and others.)

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
(Those persecuted because of loyalty to Christ).

Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.
(To stand firm and strong in your faith in Christ no matter the cost.)

Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
(Serving our Lord and Savior is our honor here on earth. What hope we have to praise our Lord who wants to honor us in heaven.)

Matthew 5:3-12

The Lord Jesus understood our humanness, our strengths, frailties, faults, emotions, actions or reactions. After all, He became human so that He would know what it means to live in the flesh. He gave us the Beatitudes so that we would memorize them in our hearts, practice them, live them, and make them the substance of our character thereby emulating His character. When we do, one day He will reward us for our faithfulness. If there is a Beatitude that needs working on, ask the Lord to help you strengthen it.
